The Full Story of Passion Morena What is known about this Spanish language romance novel, the first of three novels in the trilogy entitled "El amor en los tiempos del cólera" that became famous throughout Latin America? The novel tells the story of two lovers, Diego and Morena who are both abandoned by their families because they are different. Diego is a wealthy 17 year old boy, while Morena is his lowly servant. They find love in each other despite the circumstances that surround them. She becomes pregnant with Diego's child, but she bears it to give him some semblance of happiness so he can stop wondering what might have been. The novel is set in 19th century Venezuela. The time was the end of Spanish rule and the beginning of the Republic. In an interview from 1972, Mario Vargas Llosa said that he only learned about the existence of "Pasion Morena" during his mid-twenties, when a friend who had read it as a boy lent it to him. He said that its narrative tone was similar to that of his own first three novels, but that its plot was "trite and conventional." The music CD "Romantic Classics", released by Ariola in 2001, has a song entitled "Pasion Morena". In the movie "Mujer de al lado" (1987), Maria Conchita Alonso sings a song entitled "Pasion Morena". In 2008, Juan Diego's first album, "Pasion", was produced and released by PRT. The album contains a song called "Pasion Morena".The novel became so popular that it was made into a 1972 Mexican telenovela and then into two special episodes of the Mexican TV show "La Lupe", aired in 1976 and 1977, known as "Los tres Paddy" (The Three Patsy). The novel was also adapted into an Argentinean telenovela in 1977. It was produced by the well known company "Teatro Atlantida" and starred Angélica María, José Carlos Alem, Luis Brandoni, Antonio Gadea, Gladis Lerman and Guillermo Fadner. The telenovela lasted for 108 episodes. The novel was also made into a Brazilian telenovela in 1975 with the same name. Morena was also made into a Venezuelan telenovela in 1978 written by Alicia Urrejola starring Delia Oyola, Paco Soler and Daniel Reynoso. It lasted for 199 episodes. Morena also became a popular Argentinean telenovela in 1989. ("Pasion Morena" is the Spanish for passion). The telenovela was written by Maria Quiroga, starred Héctor Beller and María José Bellido, who played Morena. The telenovela lasted 21 episodes. In 1980 both "El amor en los tiempos del cólera", and "Pasion Morena" were adapted into European telenovelas broadcast in Spain.
